Bastille

Paris, France

Bastille station in Paris offers more than just a place to catch the Metro. Passengers entering from any entrance or arriving on any train can find their way to the Bobigny/Pablo Picasso-bound platform to discover a special piece of history.

Remnants of the Fortress

While waiting for a northbound train, travelers can see the remaining foundation stones of the famous Bastille fortress. These stones are all that remain of the former stronghold, whose grand steps once led directly up from the bustling Place de la Bastille.

History Beneath the Surface

On the platform, maps and displays help visitors understand how the fortress once fit into the area. These explanations show the exact spot where the fortress used to stand in relation to today’s surroundings. Interestingly, the place where the front steps used to be is now home to the Café des Phares, bridging past and present in a busy modern neighborhood.
