Tierpark

Berlin, Germany

The Tierpark in former East Berlin spreads across wide, green grounds and has welcomed visitors for around half a century. It feels more like a landscaped park where animals live among lawns, trees, and winding paths than a traditional city zoo. Despite its calm, open layout, it stands among the largest zoos in Europe and houses a collection of animals comparable in size to that of the historic Berlin Zoo in the west.

Scale and animal collection

Compared with its West Berlin counterpart, the Tierpark offers more space but a slightly different focus. The number of animals is nearly the same, yet there are fewer reptiles and aquatic species on display. The emphasis leans toward open enclosures and broad habitats, giving a sense of room to roam for both animals and visitors.

A palace in the park

In the northeast corner of the grounds stands Schloss Friedrichsfelde, an elegant palace dating back to the late 17th century. This historic building adds a touch of baroque character to the landscape, linking the modern zoo experience with centuries of Berlin history.
