Artistanbul Feshane
Pictures of part of a new cultural centre. One could visit part of the buildings and the grounds, but the exhibition area was closed. So just pictures of the general outlay in a former factory, with lots of space. From the Daily Sabah I quote: “ArtIstanbul Feshane. Spanning over an impressive area of 8,000 square meters, this cultural hub features a biennial area, temporary exhibition spaces, a store, a conference hall, a library, and a cafe, offering visitors a rich and immersive experience. […] Originally built in 1833, Feshane was established as a textile factory during the Ottoman era. Its primary function was to produce the fez hats”. You can get here with a new tram to Eminönü, and the Eyüp Sultan area is across the road.

Feshane

Istanbul, Turkey

Feshane has a unique place in Istanbul’s history. It first began as a factory that made fezzes—the bright red, felt hats closely associated with Ottoman tradition. These hats were introduced in the early 19th century, part of efforts by the Ottoman Empire to modernize and shift away from older customs like wearing turbans.

Changing Times and New Purposes

By the 1920s and 1930s, Turkey was undergoing major changes under the leadership of Atatürk. The fez, once a symbol of modernity, became linked to the old Ottoman way of life. To encourage a more Western image, the fez was banned in favor of new styles of dress. As a result, Feshane’s original purpose faded away.

Restoration and Renewal

Decades later, Feshane found new life. A careful restoration in 1998 transformed the former factory into a cultural and exhibition center, giving the historic building a fresh role in the city. Another round of restoration in 2023 updated the site once again. Now, under the name Artistanbul Feshane, it serves as a vibrant center for culture and the arts, welcoming visitors to explore its storied halls.
