Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana
The Palace of Italian Civilization, begun in 1938 by Giovanni Guerrini, Ernesto Bruno La Padula, and Mario Romano, is the most famous building in the EUR district. It features six floors of arches adorned with sculptures (arts and activities) and dominates the Tiber River at the top of a monumental staircase. Four sculptural groups define the perimeter of the building. It has recently been renovated to serve as a center open to the public. The creation of the new district of Rome, called EUR: Esposizione Universale di Roma, was decided in 1936 by Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the March on Rome with a Universal Exposition scheduled for 1942. A few buildings were constructed, but development and construction work were halted by the war. The architects in charge of the project were Marcello Piacentini, assisted by Giuseppe Pagano, Luigi Piccinato, Ettore Rossi, and Luigi Vietti. Work resumed in 1951 with the ambition to make EUR a business district associated with a residential urban area, connected by metro to Rome and by train to Ostia.
